Long Shadows Home

I work across multiple mediums, blending elements from each discipline. With photography as the foundation, my most recent works move away from documentation toward interpretation exploring the relationship between people, animals and the land—and the sense of belonging that can exist within a place we call home.

My home and studio in Abiquiu, New Mexico, long a source of inspiration for artists, plays a key role in the shift. Surrounded by massive geological formations, the magic of the terrain encourages reflection and close observation. Light, atmosphere and open space have become as important as the figures themselves. Larger areas of sky, landscape and shadow are at the heart of each composition, giving the figures more room to exist within their surroundings rather than dominate them. I may crop tight, remove information, shift scale, flatten areas into color or silhouette. I like the tension between what is photographic and what is invented—what is real and what is romanticized.
