Legend — and Legendary

In the mid-60s, lots of kids were playing with military toys. GI Joe’s popularity was at a high. What about the West, cowboys, horses and ranching? To spark the imagination of young girls and boys and kindle kid love, the Marx company created the Johnny West toyline. There was Johnny, Jane, his wife, a few kids, a horse named Flame and lots of ranch animals. The toys could bend and move (1001 positions the box proclaimed). I don’t remember my seven brothers and sisters or me having a set, but I do know how shows like Bonanza and books like Oh Pioneers! made a lasting imprint and shaped my ideas of the West. Johnny and Jane West — and childhood — are the inspiration for “He’s a Legend” and “She’s Legendary” (18x18 in each); both are available at Grace Renee Gallery in Carefree, AZ.

What are your first memories of the West?
